This Privacy Notice describes how Chaptered ("the App") handles information when you use the App.
1 Information We Collect
a. User-Provided Information
The App may ask you to provide a name.
- This information is stored locally on your device only
- It is used solely for in-app personalization
- It is not transmitted, shared, or uploaded to any server
Providing a name is optional.
b. Book Information
When you search for books or add books to your collection, the App retrieves book metadata (titles, authors, covers, descriptions) from the Google Books API.
- Search queries are sent to Google's servers to retrieve results
- Book data you save is stored locally on your device
- We do not store or track your search history on our servers
c. Analytics Data
The App collects anonymous usage data to help improve functionality and stability. This data may include:
- App usage events (screens viewed, features used)
- Device or app instance identifiers
- Crash and performance information
- General device information (OS version, device type)
This data does not include user-provided names, book collections, or other personally identifiable information.
Analytics are collected using PostHog, which acts as a data processor on our behalf.
2 How We Use Information
Information is used only to:
- Improve the App's performance and features
- Understand how the App is used in aggregate
- Diagnose technical issues and fix bugs
3 Legal Basis for Processing
We process analytics data based on our legitimate interests in:
- Understanding how users interact with the App
- Improving App functionality and user experience
- Ensuring the App operates correctly
You can opt out of analytics collection at any time (see "Your Choices" below).
4 Data Storage and Sharing
- User-provided information (such as your name and book collection) remains on your device
- Analytics data is processed by PostHog (see their Privacy Policy)
- Book search queries are processed by Google (see their Privacy Policy)
- No personal data is sold or shared with third parties for marketing purposes
International Data Transfers
Analytics data may be transferred to and processed in countries outside your country of residence, including the United States. These transfers are necessary to provide the service and are conducted with appropriate safeguards.
5 Data Retention
- Local data remains on your device until you delete the App or clear its data
- Analytics data is retained for up to 24 months, after which it is anonymized or deleted
- Crash reports are retained for up to 90 days
6 Your Rights
Depending on your location, you may have rights under data protection laws, including:
- Access: Request information about data we process
- Deletion: Request deletion of your data
- Opt-out: Opt out of analytics collection
- Portability: Request a copy of your data
Since user-provided data (name, books, reading progress) is stored locally on your device, it can be removed by deleting the App or clearing the App's data in your device settings.
For California Residents (CCPA)
California residents have additional rights under the California Consumer Privacy Act:
- We do not sell your personal information
- We do not share your personal information for cross-context behavioral advertising
- You may request disclosure of the categories of information we collect

7 Your Choices
You have control over your data:
- Local Data: You can delete your book collection and reading data through the App's Settings or by uninstalling the App
- Device Permissions: You can manage camera permissions (used for barcode scanning) in your device settings
8 Children's Privacy
The App is intended for users of all ages. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under the age of 13. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, please contact us.
9 Changes to This Notice
This Privacy Notice may be updated from time to time. We will notify you of material changes by updating the "Last updated" date at the top of this page. We encourage you to review this notice periodically.
